When you are considering a suitable place for your puppy to relax, play and sleep within your home, there are a few things you need to take into account.
Firstly, the space needs to be big enough for your dog to move around freely, along with a comfortable area to rest and sleep.
Secondly, it should be safe and free from any hazards which could cause injury or damage.
Finally, make sure that the area is well ventilated and has access to natural light.
If you are not sure whether a particular space is suitable for your puppy, it’s always best to be cautious and possibly choose another location within your home. Remember, your puppy’s safety is always paramount.
GROWING PUP NEEDS
Once you have found the perfect place, make sure that your puppy has plenty of rest, as your growing dog is going to need all the energy to become fit, healthy and bouncy.
BEDS
When looking for the perfect bed for your puppy, always look for one that is big enough to allow your dog to lie comfortably in natural positions, as well as stretch out.
The bed should be soft and padded, as well as durable and washable so you can keep it clean. Make sure it is made of safe materials.
DESTRUCTIVE PUPS
Some puppies tend to chew on the corners of their bed which eventually leads to it needing to be replaced. Consider this before buying your dogs bed.
DOG CRATES
Dog crates provide your puppy with a safe and secure place to stay. They can be used as a training aid, but must never be used as a time out area for unwanted behaviours. Make sure your dog has enough room to move about, and consider how big your dog will eventually become, before purchasing.
Crates can also be used to keep puppies secure and comfortable while they are travelling in a vehicle, though you may find a seatbelt harness may work better and take up less space.
While you are in the house with your beloved four-legged friend, consider leaving the crate door open so your pup can take his/herself to bed if they want to.
Here is a list of items to consider leaving inside the crate:
- padded waterproof mat
- comfy bedding
- strip of material from the breeder, which contains mum’s scent
- a worn, unwanted t-shirt from the main carer
- soft toys
- Snuggle heartbeat stuffed toy
- Teething toy/s
- KONG – helps with separation anxiety
- Small water bowl with water (if safe to do so – consider spillages, dehydration, central heating in the room, toileting)
TOYS AND STIMULATION
One of the best ways to keep your puppy happy and fulfilled is to provide plenty of exercise, both indoors and out.
Puppies love to play games and engage in training sessions, so be sure to set aside more than enough time each day for interactive fun.
Socialising your dog with people, other dogs, and different sounds, static and moving objects is also very important. Without this socialisation the world can be taken as a scary, stressful place, which can lead to anxieties and fears.
Finally, make sure there are plenty of toys around the house, especially chew toys for teething puppies. By providing plenty of stimulation, you can help your puppy avoid boredom and mischief.
